Baleària Takes Control of Armas Trasmediterránea Operations in the Canary Islands

Spanish ferry operator Baleària has assumed operational control of Armas Trasmediterránea’s activities in the Canary Islands, further strengthening its leading position in the Spanish ferry market. This strategic move reinforces the company’s presence not only in passenger transport but also in RoRo freight services between mainland Spain, the Canary Islands and North Africa.

The acquisition creates one of Europe’s largest ferry groups. The combined company employs around 4,500 people, operates a fleet of more than 50 vessels and is expected to transport over eight million passengers and more than eleven million freight lane metres each year. This underlines the growing importance of maritime freight transport for supplying island regions and supporting international trade.

As part of the integration, Baleària has announced an investment programme worth €45 million over the next three years. The plan includes modernising the acquired fleet, investing in digitalisation and service quality, and introducing new vessels. At the same time, the company will retain all employees, ensuring operational continuity and long-term stability. The Canary Islands operations will gradually be managed under the new Baleària Canarias brand while the Armas Trasmediterránea brand will remain in use during the transition period.
