Wasaline continues its commitment to environmentally friendly shipping with the successful upgrade of its hybrid ferry Aurora Botnia, which has been operating on the Vaasa (Finland) – Umeå (Sweden) route since 2021. Following the modernization of its battery system, the vessel now features a total battery capacity of 12.6 MWh, making it one of the world’s leading RoPax ferries in terms of onboard energy storage.

More Battery Capacity – Lower Emissions

The completed upgrade has increased Aurora Botnia’s battery capacity from the original 2.2 MWh to a total of 12.6 MWh. Thanks to the new energy storage system, the ferry can operate a significantly larger portion of each crossing using electric power, further reducing fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions.

Aurora Botnia is already recognized as one of Europe’s most advanced hybrid ferries. The vessel is capable of operating on LNG, liquefied biogas (LBG), and electric power, and was specifically designed to provide a sustainable transport link between Finland and Sweden.
